The Best Electric Chainsaw

Last Updated: May 19, 2016 By: Steve

We review the best electric chainsaws for the moneyChainsaws are essential if you’re big into lawn and garden maintenance, side jobs and merely hobby work. Nothing is worse than using a hand saw to get some quick cutting done, being an overall hassle in terms of making us tired and wasting time. Although our 10 best chainsaws shopping guide gave us a lot of options, in this article we constrain our search of chainsaws to only electric-powered models. There are some high-quality and relatively affordable models powered by electricity out there that rival gas-powered chainsaws; however, which is best depends on a few factors when it comes to your particular needs, which we list below. Let’s see what we’ve found today.

How to pick the best electric chainsaw

  • Pricing – There’s not too big of a price range when it comes to the best electric chainsaws in the market — we’ll see some priced at under $100 while others can go a bit above that. How much you have saved to invest in your chainsaw will really steer you in a particular direction.
  • Corded vs. cordless – Of course with electric lawn and garden power tools, this debate will come up time and time again. Which do you prefer? You have some convenience with cordless, battery-powered chainsaws in terms of versatility and moving around; however, you’ll have to make sure your batteries stay charged and it may die in the middle of a longer project. Corded models will continue to run on electricity for as long as you want, but we’re not sure if you’d like a cord following you everywhere you go.
  • Bar length – We don’t recommend going under 14″, although regardless of size you should be able to cut what’s in front if you. The range is from 14″ to 20″ and up.
  • Extra features – Easy start, specialized grips, vibration reduction, brushless motors, self-lubrication and more. Which features stand out as important to you?

The best electric chainsaws

Remington RM1425

The best electric chainsaw in our opinion

This is in our opinion one of the best corded electric chainsaws available for the money. Not only does Remington consistently build durable motors, it also earns long time positive reviews by users when it comes to the overall build and quality their tools provide at a decent cost (as compared to some other heavy hitters in the market). The Remington RM1425 is great for garage and other common work for most with its compact design and handy grip.

For a newbie, it could be a challenge to operate this tool, especially when you don’t know how much oil you need for the chain. But experience is the best teacher and you can learn immediately after you start using it. You’re getting a 14″ low-kickback bar and chain, an 8-amp motor for some decent power, external chain tension adjustment, and it comes fully built right out of the box. It doesn’t cost an arm and a leg either, saving some space in your wallet for other lawn and garden gear you may need.

Black & Decker LCS1240

Another very highly rated electric chainsaw to buy

Up next, we have the Black & Decker LCS1240 which rivals the previous electric chainsaw since it’s a few more bucks and you get some cordless action here. This is definitely a compact and high quality machine. It is equipped with a 40 V battery and it does what it should — some great powered cuts for most materials you’ll encounter. It’s a little more powerful given the components of a genuine Oregon chain and automatic oiling that allows the user to stay free from grease. This is a great feature because sometimes a new user will not be able to sense how much oil is too much.

You will love how the translucent window helps you notice the oil level. The majority of homeowners will love this DIY tool as long as it is not for long hauling work, but it will probably be pretty rare if you find a job it won’t work with.

Worx WG304.1

A pretty popular electric chainsaw

The Worx WG304.1 electric chainsaw is definitely worth checking out if you wanted a corded model that was a bit higher in quality than the Remington. It works great when you use it for heavy-duty applications. This is a solution for those looking for a powerful electric chain saw with less maintenance that performs effectively. Of course, it is not a high-end tool because of the pricing, but it offers great value and cutting edge features, not to mention you will love how lightweight it is.

For a budget-friendly price point and steady power in a 15-Amp motor, the Worx offers more than what a standard chain saw can give. Cutting logs or a huge tree in a single pass is something you can most likely pull off and it does not really need manual chain tension. It works automatically with the system.

GreenWorks 20312 DigiPro G-MAX

A GreenWorks electric chainsaw worth buying

The GreenWorks 20312 is one of the best electric chainsaws if you were looking for a top-of-the-line model. It’s up there in terms of price but you’re getting what you pay for — a brushless motor (cut up to 100 in a single charge), less vibration than most, a chain brake and low kickback chain for safety, and it comes with a battery and charger in the box. It is a surprise for the first timer as you handle it smoothly and easily.

The highlight here is a brushless motor used in the DigiPro electric chainsaw, and it does give that benefit for efficiency. It is also quieter – something that every user would want to hear if you’re aware of how loud these things can get sometimes (unless you’re into loudness, you never know). Expect high quality from its Oregon bar and chain and no oiling needed because it works automatically. It is an easy tool to use and retains a lot of the tension.

Sun Joe SWJ701E

Sun Joe's best electric chainsaw for the money

Last but not least, the Sun Joe SWJ701E is pretty budget-friendly as compared to others and it makes it easy to find a great electric chainsaw if you were in need of a lower price-point. Of course, with all of the diverse types in the market, it will be easy to make someone confused. But the 14-Amp offered by Sun Joe is something under the radar and apparently what it is capable of often goes unnoticed. It’s 18″ and self-lubricating with an Oregon bar and chain like the others, is lightweight and as a plus offers a hand guard to help with kickback. Best used with limbs, firewood and logs.
