The Best Gas-Powered Chainsaw

Last Updated: March 19, 2018 By: Steve

We review the very best gas chainsaws for the moneyNothing beats the ruggedness and power of a gas-run power tool. Although we’ve seen some benefits of going the electric chainsaw route as well, you’re here for a reason — to use some solid gasoline when working with your chainsaw. There are some pretty solid models out there, but which are the best? Which gas chainsaws are worth the money? Today we took the time to sift through rubble and find the best of the best. although which is right for you depends on a few factors we list later on.

If you came over here from our top 10 best chainsaws article, you were able to constrain your shopping list to gasoline compatible models. We all know that classic gas smell and sound when we’re getting those heavy-duty cutting jobs done. They’re not only amazing for power, but also versatility since we don’t have to mess with the electric side of things with a battery and charger or a cord. If you have a steady flow of gasoline handy, they won’t die in the middle of an important job, either. Below is our checklist to help you pick which model is best.

Choosing the best gas chainsaw

  • Price-tag – There’s a bit of a price range when it comes to gas chainsaws. Some budget-friendly models can be found at under $100 (depending on where you look), otherwise a lot of the top-of-the-line, powerful models can hike up there within the few hundred-dollar price point. How much money do you have on hand to invest in your chainsaw?
  • Your intended use? If you’re looking for some heavy-duty applications and need as much power as you can get, we recommend sticking with a Husqvarna model since they offer the largest, most powerful gas-powered chainsaws out there. Otherwise, for medium-duty use and most other common applications, the other models in here will not only save you some money but get most jobs done as well.
  • Features – Vibration reduction, air injection tech, effortless starting functions, built-in wrench holder, ergonomic grips and more. Which little extra specs and features that come with the chainsaw really depends on what you find appealing and useful.
  • Make sure they’re compliant – If you live in a specific state with gas-emission laws, be sure the chainsaw is certified (such as the CARB compliance in California).

The best gas-powered chainsaws

Husqvarna 460

One of the best gas chainsaws in the market

This large gas-powered chainsaw is ideal for demanding cutting jobs where there is a need to have more power and a longer guide bar than most. Husqvarna is a heavy-hitter in the best gas chainsaw realm. This one is equipped with their X-Torq engine that has a high torque to rpm range. The chainsaw has been ergonomically designed with the user in mind for some great build and control. It allows the user to easily handle the power of the saw and has a number of additive features, such as ‘LowVib’ to help with annoying vibration, ‘Air Injection’ and ‘Smart Start’ to aid in safety precaution. The air injection system removes most of the larger dust and debris particles before they reach the air filter. It will result in reduced cleaning of the filter and it improves the engine life. Lastly, The adjustable oil pump lets the user control the oil flow accordingly, depending on the application or weather conditions. If you wanted one of the best gas chainsaws and it fits within your budget, we say take a look at the Husqvarna 460 and ignore the others.

Poulan Pro PP5020AV

Another one of the best gas chainsaws

This is one of the best gas chainsaws that you can find for medium duty projects and it is the ideal option for general property management, firewood cutting and more. It has a 50cc, 2 cycle engine with a super clean air filter system and aluminum professional style clutch cover to offer great durability. It also has an automatic gear which is driven up with the oil pump and offers tool-less access to the air filter and a spark plug which reduces the vibration. The effortless pull starts the system, and it has a double post chain brake to offer added safety for on-board locking. A wrench holder is built-in the rear handle with a 20 bar length. It is fully assembled and it includes the carry case. It’s priced a lot lower than the previous model, so if you wanted a higher-quality gas chainsaw but wanted to save a few more dollars, we recommend the Poulan Pro PP5020Av.

Remington RM 4214

A very solid gas-powered chainsaw

This one was rated way too highly by users around the net. You can tame smaller or hard to reach branches and trees by the use of this extremely compact gas chainsaw. It is reliable with a solid engine for the price that delivers steady power and low kickback with a 14 inch bar and chain. It has an ergonomic design that is paired with the cushion wrap handle to make the chainsaw comfortable and maneuverable. It is equipped with QuickStart Technology to help with easy usage, and it makes the pull start easier to handle. It has a 5 point anti-vibration system that ensures comfortable operation. The Remington RM 4214 chainsaw is an affordable option that even though compact, has the same power the larger options offer. You may even like the smaller size to help with versatility than the other monsters out there.

Husqvarna 440E

Husqvarna's other best gas-powered chainsaw

Here’s another top-of-the-line gas chainsaw by Husqvarna. This one has an engine that delivers amazing power and torque while offering lower fuel consumption and reduced exhaust. The three-piece crankshaft gives the chainsaw maximum durability with most of the toughest applications out there. Like the previously listed 460 Rancher, the air injection system works along with the air cleaning system to remove large dust and debris particles in order to reduce the air filter cleanings as well as improve the engine life. It is easy to start with a combined stop and start switch with the Smart Start system and fuel pump. It comes with a quick release air filter that can help with easy cleaning or replacement. The Husqvarna 440E is ideal for landowners who want to have a lightweight but efficient all around saw. It’s a bit cheaper than their other chainsaw here, too.

Poulan Pro P3314

Poulans other great gas chainsaw

Lastly, we have another great gas-powered Poulan Pro chainsaw. This product can be easily used at home or the work site. It has a gear driven automatic oiler and is ideal for cutting jobs around a yard with its 28 inch diameter and cutting capacity. It features a solid, clean air filter system that extends the life of the air filter. It includes a 14 inch steel bar with a primer bulb to offer easy starting. To offer better safety, the inertia activated chain brake can stop rotation of the chain when kickback takes place. Check out the Poulan Pro P3314 if the other models in here weren’t appealing because of their price. It’s one of the best budget-friendly gas-powered chainsaws out there.
