We’ve continued our journey in reviewing the very best saws of all kinds and types, and this time we’re taking a look at a more advanced tool to add to your repertoire: miter saws. Although there are three different types which we will expand upon later on in the article, there are some exceptional models of each to take a look at. DeWalt dominates the miter saw market to be honest, but there are indeed quite a few others worth looking at that could fit with your budget and needs.
What is a miter saw?
A miter saw is a tool that enables you to cut at different angles. The blade on the miter saw is mounted on a swinging arm that can move to the right or left to create cuts at a desired angle. A miter saw can be used to easily and swiftly cut and make things such as frames for pictures and doors, etc.
There are three types of miter saws: compound miter saw, dual compound miter saw and sliding compound miter saw. Which type you need really depends on what type of work you foresee yourself needing to complete. For some more information on which one is best for you, we like Home Depot’s types of miter saws buying guide, but to sum it up, we have:
- Compound: Basic cuts as well as bevel and compound cuts for some versatility.
- Dual compound: Allows you to make bevel and compound cuts in both directions without moving the saw.
- Sliding compound: You can make basic, bevel and compound cuts and the sliding head gives you the ability to work in wider pieces.
How to choose your miter saw
- Your budget – Unfortunately, miter saws aren’t nearly as cheap as cordless drills or anything we can find separately in a power tool combo kit. However, this is all justified with it’s capabilities. We recommend saving up a decent amount of cash to invest in a well-built and powerful miter saw.
- Which type of miter saw? We listed them above and tried to include all types in this article. This will steer you in an obvious direction to narrow down your search.
- Blade size – The average size of a miter saw blade is 10″ to 12″. We chose most of the models that gave us this since it’s the most common and efficient.
- Motor size – How many amps in terms of power? The typical popularly rated models are around 15-Amp and higher. You can probably get away with going slightly lower, but we recommend keeping it at this number to make sure you’re covered for not only now but future projects as well.
- Additional features? Some like laser guides, others a specialized group, some with more portability than others. It all depends on what you want to add (which most likely will hike up the price, but may be worth it to you).
