Black & Decker LDX120C Cordless Drill Review

Last Updated: July 8, 2016 By: Steve

We review the Black & Decker LDX120C Cordless DrillWhen it comes to highly rated, solid power tools within the budget-friendly price range (usually), Black & Decker never seems to disappoint. Especially in the cordless drill game, there are way too many models to count worth looking at. Due to this fact, we have a few ways to sift through the rubble and find the best cordless drill despite the many choices available. Today we took the time to review one of the most highly sought after cordless drills in the market — The LDX120C. Let’s check out the pros, cons and how it holds up vs. some of the popular competitors out there.

Main features of the Black & Decker LDX120C

  • Our review the Black and Decker LDX120C cordless drillLightweight\compact design
  • Attached LED light
  • Battery: Lithium Ion (20 Volts)
  • Chuck size: 3/8 inches
  • Clutch settings: 11
  • RPM: 0-650 rpm
  • Torque: 115 in-lbs
  • Dimensions: 10.2″ x 8.4″ x 3.7″
  • In the box: drill, battery, charger, one double-ended bit

This is one of the highest rated drills on the internet for quite a few reasons. For one, the price point is very low as compared to some other higher quality drills made by competitors like Makita or DeWalt. People are very high on this drill since most competitors within this price range are usually pretty cheap or even refurbished tools — so we’d recommend buying this one if you wanted a relatively budget-friendly cordless drill that won’t be breaking your wallet yet still providing some great quality and power to your workshop.

It’s also great in terms of usability since it weights just under 4 lbs — you’ll rarely feel that pesky operator’s fatigue (unless you’re working all day — take a break!). The LED light attached is also a great additional features we love on cordless drills to help with visibility in darker environments or even in smaller spaces you can’t normally see in day light.

Power and drill usability

In terms of power, you’re covered in the voltage count (it made it into our best 20-volt cordless drill guide) as compared to other popular 18v models. You’re going to be able to drill through most wood, plastic and metal (aside from heavy-duty metals). Of course, for heavy-duty types of driving, always go for one of the best impact drivers out there, or even look at hammer drills and nail guns to accommodate your cordless drill for some extra torque in your repertoire.

As stated previously for the usability of the drill, the low weight of under 4 lbs is great for all hands, regardless of if you’re a man or woman. Unless you’re holding it up and have to position your shoulder to really use those muscles in awkward angle, it’s solid for long uses. The grip also pretty comfortable and helps you with versatility.

Build and stability

This solid cordless drill will help you with any woodThe build of the Black and Decker LDX120C cordless drill isn’t necessarily a DeWalt quality that’s similar to a solid rock. The body of the drill is a plastic make and although not cheap, isn’t a metal or sturdy type of material. You’ll want to make sure you take care of it properly and keep it safe, especially if you plan on traveling with the drill. The batteries last about an hour to an hour a half, so stability wise they will last you a long time (in terms of years of using it), but you’ll have to make sure they’re charged up before using them and take breaks here and there during long projects (it’s fine if you charge it over night). It’s great for DIYer’s and is more than just a simple desk-building or picture hanging application.

You can also buy their other LBX20 batteries and LCS20 chargers if you need some spare since the drill is compatible with them.

Pros and Cons of the LDX120C

Pros

  • Lightweight and compact for very easy use
  • Comes with the battery and charger so it’s usable right out of the box
  • Great quality for the price point
  • 3/8 chuck is compatible with a lot of bits
Cons

  • Battery lasts about 1.5 hours which isn’t too long compared to others (you can always charge it up during a break — it depends on the user)
  • Does not come with a protective\carrying case
  • Doesn’t function as a driver like some other competitors (but those tend to cost more)
  • Overall build isn’t necessarily heavy-duty

The final word on the LDX120C cordless drill

We would recommend this drill for anybody looking for a mid-sized model that’s applicable for most home uses (and even some professional, depending on your overall intentions of the tool). We do think there are a few other cordless drills within this price to take a look at before buying it if you want to do so comparing. Check out our top 10 best cordless drills or even our top 10 best corded drills guide if you weren’t feeling the lower battery life and don’t feel like charging it all the time.

All in all, the Black & Decker LDX120C cordless drill is a solid and highly rated model (for a reason) to take a look at. It’s well worth the investment.
